My first horse was a sorrel named Dolly. We call her old Dolly now cause I named another horse after her. She was my granddad's horse first. He use to walk all of us kids (20 grandkids) around the yard on her back until he got sick and couldn't do it anymore. After he died, we moved up to the "home place" and I was gonna ride Dolly up there...a whole 3 miles! I was 7 years old. I remember getting to the corner of the field and Dolly turned around and raced for home. She got back to the house, stopped under the plum tree and I fell off into the biggest sticker patch on the place. I sat there and cried until Mom came looking for me. Dolly lived to be about 40 years old. We used her to work cattle right up to the last. She'd be so tired after moving cows that she would lay down for 3 days and not move. Poor old girl. We had her put down in the winter when she couldn't hardly walk. I made my dad dig a huge hole and bury her because my brother's kept teasing me about her being turned into dog food and glue.
My first horse was actually a sorrel and white paint pony. Dad had the neighbor bring her over one day to let me ride her... I'm trying to remember what story he gave me as to why the pony was there... I rode her all day, first saddled and then later when dad told me he was too busy to saddle her back up, I led her over to a saw horse (Dad was working on something that day and had them out) tied her lead rope to the other side of her halter and climbed up. Needless to say Dad caught me a few minutes later riding around the yard bareback and had a fit. It was over a month later when I found out she was mine. Dad didn't give her to me until Christmas but he had already bought her before I'd ever ridden her. I didn't have her very long. She was real old when we got her and she collicked and didn't pull thru. After that Dad would never buy me another one. I had just turned 8 when she died. Now I'm 27 and I bought my own hose last year. A quarter horse mare named Socks. She is the first horse I've had since my pony, Penny.
