Going back many many years, somewhere in the early 70's trail rides were something that were really looked forward to. But the most fun were the ones taken with a dear dear friend, never really having a decided destination or time frame we would just set out and ride until we felt it was time to turn around and go home.
What made the rides with this friend so special was the fact that I was just a kid who got into more than her share of trouble (or so it seemed) and she was a young adult who could have just sent me away and gone out with other adults.
Even though I didn't realize it at the time she made a lasting impression on a very young girl that would stick with her the rest of her life. We would be riding along not really paying attention to much at all, just enjoying the time and before long she would break out into a little song that just seem to fit the pace that our horses were moving at.
The funny thing is to this day I still sing that same song when I'm out riding my horse and it just seems to make the ride a little more special and I think my old horse actually looks forward to the song as well.
The song I'm speaking of starts out:
When I was just a wee little lad full of health and joy
My father homeward came one day and gave to me a toy
*Chourse*
It went zip when it moved and bop when it stopped and brrrrrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will...
Thank you friend for the memories....
When I was just a wee little lad full of health and joy
My father homeward came one day and gave to me a toy
A wonder to behold it was with many colors bright
and the moment I laid eyes on it, it became my hearts delight..............
It went.............................
*Chouse*
zip when it moved and bop when it stopped and brrrrrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will...
When I first picked it up it gave to me a surprise
for right on it's botton were two big buttons that looked like great big eyes
I first push one and then the other, and then I twisted it's lid
And when I set it down again here is what it did
*Chourse*
zip when it moved and bop when it stopped and brrrrrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will...
It first marched right and then matched left,
and then matched under a chair
and when I looked around again, it wasn't even there
I started to cry and my daddy laughed, for he know that I would find
that my marvelous little toy was chugging from behind
*Chourse*
zip when it moved and bop when it stopped and brrrrrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will...
Well the years have gone by so quickly it seems
I have my own little boy
and yesterday, I gave to him my marvelous little toy
His eyes nearly popped our of his head as he game a squeal of glee
For he loved it just like me
*Chourse*
zip when it moved and bop when it stopped and brrrrrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will..................................
Christmas is absolutely my most favorite time of year. I love the magic and I always went on a Christmas Eve ride.
When I was 14 years old I went riding with my sister.
There was fresh batch of snow layered so gently upon the trails. Just enough to make every thing a sparkling, dazzling winter white on a warmer Christmas eve in Northern Wisconsin.
The moon was full and the sky seamed so clear. The stars lite up everywhere, twinkling as if they were singing to the heavens and they seemed to be so close, I could pick them right out of the sky and hold them in my hand. I have always believed in the magic of the universe, and a night like this just verified every thing that I held dear to my heart: Life's magic.
Side by side, my sister and I just walked down the road. We were singing Christmas songs together and dreaming of Christmas morning like two young girls love to do.
We were on a back country road and our horses hoof prints were the only marks left in the fresh snow. We would trun around and around just to see our own tracks. It was if the entire world was made for just us. We could hear each breath of the horses and each click of their hooves.
It was a ride that was just so simple, but yet it would last a life time. It was not the greatest adventure, but it certainly was the greatest company. I think at that moment, I felt closer to my sister than I have ever been in my life.
The entire ride was just a magical Christmas ride, that has been close in my memory for the last 40 years. That was my all-time favorite ride.
Perfect harmony with the universe and a lifetime friends, my horse and my sister.
